Pre & Primary School Matron.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Olympus Pre & Primary School (OPPS) is an entity of the Olympus Educare Ltd company
located at Misisi in the township of Bunda (4 Kilometers east of Bunda town), in Mara District
of Tanzania. Operated under the ethos and value-system of Seventh day Adventists, OPPS seeks
to nurture its pupil in holistic education, which caters for the mental, social, physical, and
spiritual needs of the student.

which make the school unique in its quality education delivery. English-medium of learning
provides instruction. OPPS has a mixed boarding system for children aged between 5 and 15
years. The accommodation is dormitory style for both boys and girls.

Personal Specification
a. The Matron should have a warm and caring disposition, so as to provide a welcoming
environment for both pupils and parents.
b. It is essential to be well organized and professional in approach. Previous experience in dealing
with children would be preferable.
c. A sound knowledge of English language is desired.
d. A first aid qualification is necessary or a willingness to undertake training if required.
e. The Matron is responsible for the welfare and health of all pupils boarding in the Dormitory.
f. She will work alongside the Teacher on duty to ensure the smooth running of the Dormitory.
g. She is also expected to support the activities programmed or organized by the school
administration staff (including pastoral and extra-curricular engagements)
h. She is responsible to the Headmaster/Headmistress.

Hours of work 
This is a residential position during the school term time. Also, sufficient time at the beginning and
end of term is required to ensure the Dorms are ready, either for returning children or the first group of
vacation boarders (Lets).
The Matron will be on duty whilst in residence with the exception of a weekly 12 hour period
that is decided in negotiation with the Headmaster/Headmistress. There is also a down time during the
course of the day which should be agreed in negotiation with her Supervisor.

Running of the Dormitories.
a. Welcome pupils at the beginning of term
b. Encourage tidiness and care of personal items
c. Ensure the cleanliness of the pupils,
d. Encourage correct personal hygiene
e. Ensure smart appearance of pupils both in school uniform and casual clothing
f. Encourage the pupils to eat a healthy diet provided by the school
g. Promote good manners and courtesy from pupils
h. Organize in-house staff of aunties/uncles in their laundry, cleaning, house-keeping duties
i. Arrange and oversee maintenance within the Dormitories
j. Liaise with the Medical Centre
k. Administer medication in line with doctors’/nurses’ guidelines
l. Be available to listen to the problems and worries of the pupils
m. Liaise with duty staff superior/subordinate to her
n. Arrange for the daily collection and delivery of post to pupils
o. Should, along with the member of staff on duty, answer parents’ concerns and channel them to
the Headmaster/Headmistress.

General appearance
The Matron is responsible, with the help of the Seamstress for:
a. Naming all clothes
b. Making sure all clothing is fit to be worn and smart, including repair
c. Arranging for the cleaning of uniform and other clothing and bedding
d. Coordinating the purchase and replacement of uniform from the school store and
outfitters

Housekeeping
a. Preparing the Dorm at the start and end of each term
b. Supporting and managing the pupils who are expected to tidy their own areas, make their
beds and leave dormitories tidy with curtains drawn and lights off before school each day
c. Preparing pupil rotas for Dorm chores

Maintenance and Cleaning
Responsible for the maintenance of fixtures and fittings of the Dorm including:
a. identifying maintenance needs and submitting job requests
b. Liaising with and overseeing workmen carrying out repairs and check that the repairs are
completed satisfactorily
c. Reporting defects which should be entered on a repair sheet and submitted to the workshop
Facility. Emergency and serious defects should be reported to the Headmaster/Headmistress
immediately
d. Directly responsible for the cleanliness of the Dorm, including immediate environs.
e. Responsible for organizing the spring cleaning of the Dorm to include carpets and curtains, as
fits with the routine of the Dorm and vacation Lets (boarders)
f. Maintaining and managing records, inventories and funds as directed

Meals and Snacks
a. Responsible for ensuring meals and snacks are served to all pupils
b. Ensuring that the Cafeteria is ready for meals and is left tidy thereafter

Prep and weekends
a. Responsible for supervising the use of prep time for study and/or rest
b. Liaising with the kitchen for provisions and managing the weekend schedules of
games/study/activities
c. Supervising the weekly Dorm master-cleaning program

Medical matters
a. Responsible for the medical welfare of the pupils in the Dorm
b. Responsible for administering pupil medication in-line with the School guidelines and in
accordance with medical/nursing staff
c. Ensuring that pupils take their medication
d. Keeping all medication locked away in the medicine cabinet
e. Keeping records of all medication, giving dosage and time as instructed by medical/nursing
staff
f. May administer mild pain killers and deal with minor first aid
g. All other emergencies and medical problems should be directed to the Medical/nursing staff

Appointments and Hospital On-Call 
The Matron will also be expected to escort pupils (in the absence of the school nurse):
a. to the medical clinic for diagnostic care
b. to hospital appointments and clinics
c. to hospital in the case of an emergency

Other Duties 
a. Undertaking additional tasks as agreed with the Headmaster/Headmistress
b. Keeping up to date with professional developments and attending relevant programs on early
childhood care and training.
