Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics and Research)
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) works closely with the Vice-Chancellor and may be deputized for other executive functions across the organization. As a key member of senior management team, the DVC will contribute to the strategic leadership demanded by a dynamic, ambitious organization operating in an increasingly competitive marketplace. The DVC leads the strategic and operational planning of the organization ensuring the resources of the faculties and professional services are aligned with the university’s mission and service delivery strategies. The DVC reports directly to the Vice-Chancellor.
Specific Responsibilities
1. Promote policies, plans and Programmes that will enhance the academic excellence of the University
2. Oversee the implementation and on-going review of academic policy, plans and Programmes of the University to be consistent with its mission and objectives. Ensure all academic matters are in compliance with the University Charter, Rules, regulatory bodies and any other written Laws
3. Oversee the selection and admission of qualified students by Colleges
4. Oversee the creation and coordination with the implementation and on-going review of academic staffing policies to match needs of on-going and envisaged Programmes
5. Responsible for coordinating all research and consultancy activities of the University
6. Coordinate dissemination of major research findings through seminars, conferences, workshops, symposia, and making available to interested parties research abstracts or relevant findings that can inform policy and/or instrumental in solving real world problems
7. Serve as the key link-person between the University, Government and other external agencies including international bodies and coordinate resources for promotion of the University’s capacity for basic and applied contract research as well as consultancy opportunities. Pursue these opportunities to ensure that the University gets serious consideration in seeking grant funds and participation in consultancy activities, which are central to the realization of its mission and diversification of revenues
8. Co-ordinate the development and establishment of procedures for the University’s academic leadership, Programmes, management of teaching, learning and all relevant academic matters
9. Co-ordinate the appointment of external examiners by Colleges for all the examinations conducted by the affiliated colleges/faculties
10. Supervise other relevant functions in the organization to ensure timely and effective implementation of duties, hence shall cause annual performance evaluation of their effectiveness, provide feedback and make follow-up to ensure that any shortcomings are made known to the staff and corrective action is put in place
11. Perform any other duties as may be delegated by the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, and/or the University Council
Professional Requirements
1. A senior academic staff member with a rank of Professor or Associate Professor or its equivalent in either teaching or research or both
2. Excellent record of scholarship, teaching, and service to the society
3. A sound knowledge in managing university operations, external partnerships and academic environment
4. Proven successful experience of more than 10 years in Administration of higher education of which at least 6 years at a senior leadership role
